Is there a little bit of hope for The Hobbit movies? Let’s hope so. It may come in the form of a spyglass. Well, not exactly. There are talks of a potential acquisition of MGM by Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. This is definitely not a done deal however as Lions Gate has its own issues. The main one being majority stock holder Carl Ichan. As recently as March, Ichan opposed Lions Gate purchasing film libraries…like MGM. He also has clearly not been overly happy with where Lions Gate has been going as he has threatened a proxy fight to elect his own board of directors for Lions Gate. Don’t expect to hear “Bond, James Bond” anytime soon. Due to the financial crisis at MGM, the James Bond franchise has been suspended indefinitely! There has been a lot of speculation about the future of MGM. Recently Spyglass Entertainment and Lions Gate have both emerged as contenders to run the beleaguered studio.  How either company would run MGM is still very much up in the air. What is known is that MGM has $4 billion worth of debt that they need to figure out.
